Depending on how flexible your schedule is, call up the various car rental places in your city and ask them if they have any “deadheads” that need to be returned to a location near your destination. Deadheads are cars that people have driven one way, from one city to another, and dropped off there. The car eventually needs to be returned to its city of origin, and the rental companies will give good deals to individuals who will return the car for them.
