Pets have been able to be transported freely around most of Europe since 2001 under the Pet Transport Scheme (PETS) but it involves a great deal of form filling, vaccinations and up-to-date tests.

Previously the movement of pets was on condition that the pets spent 6 months in quarantine for rabies, which had been eliminated from the UK since 1902.

The PETS scheme controls all pets entering or returning to the UK from other EU countries. It has since been expanded to cover arrivals from the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Every country has different requirements both for export and import of animals, but some features are common to all. Specific regulations are:

UK Animals cannot be flown as checked baggage, only as cargo.

USA Animals being exported need to have a vet certificate and examination certified by the USDA.
