Marion Michael Morrison was born in Winterset, Iowa on May 26, 1907. Winterset was, and is, a small town...a good place to grow up in.
Wayne's father was a pharmacist, his mother Mary a housewife.
They lived in a four-room house, which has been restored back to the time period when Wayne was born - 1907.
There's plento of memorabilia there from Wayne's later years, of course. There are hundreds of rare photographs, and letters from stars like Lucille Ball, Gene autry, Maureen O'Hara and Ronald REagan. The memorabilia includes such things as the eye-patch he wore during the movie True Grit, a hat worn in Rio Lobo, and so on.
The street address is 216 S. 2nd St, in Winterset. It's located 14 miles south of Interstate 80 and 14 miles west of Interstate 35.
The Birthplace is open 7 days a week - closed on major holidays - and the guided tour cost $6. Their website is http://www.johnwaynebirthplace.org
