Bangkok is the bustling capital city of Thailand. When visiting this faraway country, guests need to be aware that the laws are very different. One thing you should note is that it is a criminal offense to offend (even by making rude comments) the royal family of Thailand. Thailand also is a long flight, so make sure to bring snacks and entertainment options.

One of the best rules to follow is to avoid so-called “Tuk-Tuks.” These are three-wheeled taxis which run on propane and are known to tip over. Not only that, but the drivers often whisk you away to some unwanted retail venue. Other options are available and are safer. Buses and taxis are available in Bangkok.

Another wise move is to pick a reputable hotel. Some of the hotels in Bangkok are downright horrid. Others are quite lovely. You don’t want to book something because it is the cheapest and get all the way there, only to discover you will be residing in a roach motel. Research any hotel you are considering.

Travel in December and January. Though these months represent the “cold” months in Thailand, the temperatures are comparable to summer in Europe. The other months are either too hot for great tourism or too rainy.

If you plan on getting a Thai massage, make sure you stick to a reputable place or you may get more than you expected. Traditional Thai massage focuses on pressure points; try Wat Pho for a relaxing afternoon.

Bangkok is a world-class city with lots on offer, from historical monuments to amazing temples to ample shopping opportunities.

Did you know that you can actually negotiate with taxi drivers there, and get them to take you anywhere you want to go in Bangkok for one fixed price?

We did this a couple years ago. It costed 2000 baht, which was around $55 at the time. Where else in the world can you hire a taxi driver to be at your beck and call all day - in a capital city, no less?

This tip is written for Bangkok, but really it could be applied to any country.

Many countries require a departure tax, but the tax is built into the price of the plane ticket, so you're not even aware of it. However, some countries require a departure tax that is NOT built into the plane ticket price.

Thailand is one such country. You basically cannot leave the country, let alone board the plane, if you do not pay the departure tax. The booth to pay the departure tax is separate from the check-in booth, right before security. Be sure to have the right amount of Baht with you, or you will be sent to the ATM or to Currency Exchange.
