The last thing you want to do is spend an hour or so unpacking your clothes and other items, and then find out that your bathtub stopper doesn't keep the water in, or that your heater or air-conditioner makes a horrible noise when you turn it on.
My tip, therefore, is to leave your luggage in your car to begin with (assuming you're travelling by car and not plane), and check out the room before you do anything. Run some water in the bathub to make sure the stopper works, and that you have hot water. Flush the toilet to make sure it doesn't run excessively. Turn on the heater or the air-conditioner, depending on the season, of course, and listen to it for a few minutes.
If the room meets these small tests, then you can go get your luggage, bring it in, and start unpacking.
