Traveling to poor countries without being a stereotypical "rich" tourist?

A good way to experience developing countries is through volunteering (sometimes called "voluntourism"). Try to research some voluntourism trips or volunteering opportunities online before you go, and see if your parents might be interested in taking part in some with you. When you volunteer, you get to interact with the local people and local culture in a much more meaningful, intimate way than if you were a normal "rich" tourist. Both you and your parents will get much more out of the trip this way!
