If you lost your credit card while on vacation, would you know who to call to cancel it? There is an inquiries phone number printed on the back of your card, but that's not going to do you much good if the card is gone.

So plan ahead and write the number down, just in case. And don't keep it in your purse or wallet. That would kind of defeat the purpose, if it's stolen.

When you plan on traveling for more than just a few days, you really should take a few precautions to make sure you home stays safe and secure in your absence. Your home is more likely to be broken into if thieves know you are away.

Tell your neighbors you plan on being away. You might even want to leave a phone number where you can be reached, in case of any emergencies. Only do this if you know your neighbors pretty well. Telling total strangers that you will be away isn't that great an idea either.

Stop your mail. Contact the post office and have a temporary hold on your mail. An overflowing mailbox is a sure sign that no one is home. And finally, either turn off your home phone or set your answering machine/service to pick up after just 1 or 2 rings.
