Some websites describe the Tsukiji Market as a "flea market", but don't visit if you are looking for an outdoor souvenir shopping experience. The Tsukiji market is first and foremost a fish market, with all the sights and smells that come along with it. And don't wear your best clothes. Fish oil and other liquids are everywhere.

It's incredibly busy, and the action starts VERY early (plan to arrive before 6am). What the exact attraction is, I'm not really sure. Lots of fresh fish for sale by auction, which doesn't seem too appealing as a visitor. Though you'll get the best sushi you've ever had, after waiting for an hour or more.

So if you really love sushi, or enjoy watching fish auctions, then the Tsukiji Market should be on your travel itinerary. If raw fish isn't your thing, feel free to skip it.
