I was driving through Millville, Indiana on a Sunday, a few months ago, heading down the highway on the long drive toward Cheyenne, Wyoming which was my ultimate destination.
I came across a brown sign with an arrow, pointing out that I was coming to an exit where I could see Wilbur Wright's birthplace.
Although I was very much interested in the Wright brothers, it hadn't occurred to me to check out their birthplaces, but since there it was, I decided to take the exit and check it out.
So I took the exit, and drove and drove and drove. The birthplace had to have been at least 15 miles away from the highway, and they never gave any mileage signs so I never knew how far away from the place it was, until I got within 3 or 4 miles of it and then they very kindly put that mileage on their signs.
So, after all that, I got to the place and it was closed! Not because it was Sunday (the museum isn't open at all on Mondays, in common with many smaller museums) but because it was past five o'clock!
It wasn't a totally wasted trip, of course. At least I now knew where it was, and I could walk around the outside of it and imagine it as it must have once been like...for all that there was now a modern houselike building in front of it (which housed the museum I didn't get to see) and behind it was the real house, obscured by a big ol' plane of a type I'm sure didnt' exist when Wright was born!
So if you're going to be driving past Millville, Indiana, any time
Here's the directions from their website:
Located on the west side of County Road 750 E about three miles north of State Road 38 and three miles south of US Hwy 36. Close to Hagerstown, also.
