The only thing I know about Carl Sandburg is that he wrote a biography of Abraham Lincoln, and was played by Hal Holbrook. But when I was driving through Galesburg, Illinois, and saw a sign pointing people towards his birthplace, I decided to check it out.
In actual fact, Carl Sandburg is a very famous writer, who won two Pulitzer Prizes, one for poetry and the other for his six-volume biography of Lincoln.
His home in Galesburg is a modest little place, and I'm sharing photos of the exterior because I visited it on a day it was closed. Nevertheless, one could walk in the backyard, where there is a Quotation Walk - each brick featuring a famous Sandburg quote, led in a circular path around a small garden seat.
The home is open Thursdays through Sundays from 9am until 5pm and for special events such as meetings, concerts and lectures. (It used to be open five days a week, but the economy has impacted these small museums and sites terribly.)
The street address is 331 East Third Street and its located on the south side of Galesburg, in a somewhat rundown section of town. Perfectly clean, just not overtly prosperous.
I wish I could share some photos of the Quotation Walk...but I was there on a grey day and most of the quotes are illegible...
