The Flight 93 Memorial was founded within days after this plane crashed on September 11, 2001. People journeyed to the site to see the final resting place of 44 heroes who gave their lives to prevent the plane from being crashed into ...whatever target its hijackers had chosen.
Several passengers and crew members made telephone calls aboard the flight and learned about the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. After learning what was happening, some of the passengers rushed the cockpit in an attempt to regain conrol of the aircraft.
The plane crashed in a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania. Everyone aboard was killed.
The crash site is located west of Skyline Road, about 2.5 miles south of U.S. Route 30 (Lincoln Highway), 1.5 miles west of Indian Lake, and approximately 2 miles north of Shanksville in Stonycreek Township.
A permanent memorial is being constructed and is supposed to be finished in 2011. Until that time, hundreds of people a day visit the site, which is watched over by the National Park Service. People leave mementos to the fallen, and there are several plaques, and flags, promising that we will never forget their sacrifice and their heroism.
