Most areas of New York City are perfectly safe, at least in daylight hours. (Of course, this same holds true for every city, large or small.) There is also safety in numbers. Tourists returning to their hotels after seeing a Broadway play will be in the company of thousands of others.
To stay safe in New York City is really a matter of common sense.Don’t walk the streets alone after midnight. If you’re driving a car into an unfamiliar area, get driving directions from the various website on the internet that offer that service, and then doublecheck those directions with the maitre-d at your hotel to see if there’s some construction going on that renders the directions invalid.
If you’re a sports enthusiast, don’t go into a sports bars on game days wearing the hat or jersey of a rival team. Don’t drink to excess, and if there are people in the bar getting rowdy, leave before things escalate.
