There's a cliche that says that tourists usually know more about a particular site than the people who live there. That may be true for a certain type of tourist, but unfortunately for the most part, tourists are just as clueless as residents.
It costs more to travel these days than ever. In order to ensure that you don't miss a thing that you would have liked to have seen on your trip to a certain location, make sure you do some research in advance.
Find out what special events, if any, take place there. For example, every August 22, a re-enactment of the Battle of Bosworth Field is held, near Leicester in England. (At least, until the present recession!) That's the day Richard III was killed in battle and Henry VII came to the throne...and the Wars of the Roses ended.
Civil War enthusiasts might want to visit a particular battlefield on the anniversary of the day of the battle (or the weekend before it), because generally that's when a reenactment of the battle is held.
Check out the websites of various museums in the location you're planning on visiting, to see on what days, if any, they're holding any special events. In so doing, you might find an event you want to attend, and so postpone your visit for a week or two in order to maek that possible.
